Old Vine Zinfandel Lopez Vineyard 2021

Scar of the Sea

This wine was picked on August 6th, fermented with native yeast and with 50% whole cluster. The grapes were basket pressed at dryness and then aged for 8 months in old French oak barrels before being bottled with minimal SO2 and without filtration.
240 cases were produced.

Notes: Think sarsaparilla root, exotic plum and extra ripe strawberries. The nose is fuller and more present with deep black cherry, some oak spice, and a bit of smudged sage. The palate has a depth and presence to it with good acid and a core of black fruits and savory herbs

Planted in 1918, 70 miles inland from Los Angeles, and certified organic by CCOF, this vineyard is part of California history. Farmed today by the Galleano family, we are lucky to be able to make wine from this old vineyard. The vines are farmed without irrigation in granite rocks and sandy soil surrounded by freeways and track homes.
Scar of the Sea focuses on working with farmers who are instrumental in farming for the future and making wines with as little intervention as possible. Our wines are made with the intention to tell a story of where they come from, the people who farm them and reflect each vintage under the California sun. The ocean’s presence has shaped our way of life along with the climate, soils, and geology of the coastal vineyards we work with that fall under the spell of her fog each day.
